Microsoft's new Copilot key is the first big change to Windows keyboards in 30 years.

In 2024, Microsoft aims to establish “the year of the AI PC”. To this end, the tech giant is introducing a major adjustment to the keyboard of upcoming PCs and laptops, beginning with a new Copilot switch. Said switch makes an appearance on a plethora of Microsoft-associated laptops and PCs and allows a user to easily access Microsoft's AI-backed Windows Copilot experience, at the mere tap of a button.

The decades-old menu key, also known as the application key, is being replaced by the new Copilot key. Although its specific location will vary among keyboards and different markets, the key is mostly found adjacent to the right-hand alt key. Essentially, it serves as a shortcut to launch Windows 11's Copilot, a virtual assistant providing built-in assistance through a chat platform comparable to ChatGPT. So, customers can ask a question or command directly to Windows and immediately get feasible results or perform streamlined actions in the operating system.

In the event that Windows Copilot is not yet accessible in your country, the Copilot key will instead initiate Windows Search. Although the current Windows key can activate the Start menu or be combined with different keys to create shortcuts for Windows features and functions, the Copilot key currently serves as a mere launch key.

Throughout the year 2023, it seems as though Microsoft has been incorporating Copilot into various aspects of their products. As part of their larger plan to implement AI-powered changes into Windows in 2024, Microsoft has introduced a new Copilot key. They are currently in the process of developing a Windows "refresh" that will prioritise the integration of new AI features. Additionally, Microsoft is actively incorporating AI into a wider range of its software and services. This commitment is emphasised by their recent rebranding of Microsoft Edge as the "AI browser" at the start of the year, indicating that their AI efforts are ongoing and far from complete.
